Design

As Editor In Chief, I play an integral role in the design and construction of each printed issue. My love for page layout and design started at the beginning of last year, with a two-page spread I wrote on Jack Nicklaus and Marv Moorehead.

This year, our visuals team includes a photography manager, photographer, arts editor and layout editor. Additionally, I have empowered staff to draw their own graphics and take their own photos. I have integrated more collaboration between the staff and visuals team in order to create more cohesive printed issues.

During our in-class workshops, I work with our Layout Editor, Elise Karas, to give feedback and edits on InDesign layouts submitted by writers. After our final workshop, any work done on the package is by me. This is the time where I make adjustments and additions to layouts before we go to print. We do our absolute best to honor the work and creative visions of the staff, but at the end of the day editors have to make the final call on every aspect of an issue.

Along one-on-one brainstorms with the visuals team, writers are highly encouraged to find inspiration from past Arlingtonian issues and work from other newsmagazines. We use the OSMA webpage displaying individual award winners as a reference for designs and ideas. Students are also empowered to work with each other, asking questions and peer reviewing.

Please note that all yellow highlights are comments left on the pdf in our Shared Google Drive made by staff during workshops. Some adjustments made following edits from our adviser and I. Images of final copies may appear darker in color as a result of printing presets.

For the Feb. 21, 2025 Arlingtonian print edition, I worked to integrate more color and text wrapping to make the issue more visually appealing and break up text.
