Law, Ethics and News Literacy
As Editor In Chief, I have worked to ensure that our staff stays educated on ethical rules that the publication follows. We work with Journalism II students to help with interviewing skills and highlight the importance of the Journalism Code of Ethics.
I am constantly encouraging writers to shoot high with interviews and finding the most credible sources, while remaining relevant and local to our school. This year, we have run into a few instances where students asked to remain anonymous or interviewees requesting a copy of stories before we print so that they could determine if they felt comfortable being used as a source. At times like this, I would with our adviser to explain what standards we must uphold as a publication, and what might jeopardize a stories authenticity.
We have constant discussions in the classroom about using Artificial Intelligence, which we are not behind when it comes to writing, and how rules and expectations surrounding it have evolved inside and outside of schools.
As Editor In Chief I have learned to work with students in an extremely sensitive political climate, navigating the balance and credibility of political stories printed. Getting the politics “right” in a time like this takes a lot of work. I have spent a lot of one-on-one time with writers, researching and fact-checking to make sure that stories are being told in a responsible way.
